Sierra Mar Vineyard is planted on land that has been in our family for three generations. At just over 1000 feet, Sierra Mar - which means "mountain sea" in Spanish - is one of the highest altitude vineyards in Santa Lucia Highlands, with sweeping views of the valley floor. In 2007, inspired by the site’s potential for producing high-altitude concentration and complexity, we broke ground, planting 38 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Viognier over the course of two years. Consisting of five terraced hills and a four-acre valley, the vineyard is divided by terrain into several 2 ½ to 4 acre blocks, each with its own distinct meso-terroir. Sierra Mar’s elevation, naturally thin soils, gusting wind and lack of water naturally stress the vines to produce small yields of intensely flavored fruit. The first wines from Sierra Mar Vineyard will be released in 2011 under our family’s ROAR label, joining wines made from our Rosella's and Garys' vineyards.
